Five tips for going greener with your car

In a world where climate change has become the biggest threat to life as we know it, it’s up to all of us to do our part for the environment. Some people do theirs by reducing plastic waste and swapping short drives for walks or public transport, but you don’t have to leave your car at home to go a little greener!

Whether your car is six months or 16 years old, there are a range of simple fixes that reduce fuel consumption and keep your car in the best shape it can be. Here are our five tips for a greener car.

Green car tip #1: Turn your air conditioner off when you can

Your car’s air conditioning consumes fuel, too, and we sometimes forget to use it economically in hot weather. Try parking in the shade or using a reflective windshield so that it takes less air-con to cool your car down again.

Green car tip #2: Use cruise control features and drive at the speed limit

Most cars lose fuel efficiency for every 8kms over 80km/hr, so as well as putting your safety at risk, going over the speed limit can lose you money on fuel. Use cruise control features to avoid fines, accidents and save up to 15 cents per litre on fuel.

Green car tip #3: End aggressive driving habits

Aggressive driving – rapid acceleration, frequent braking and speeding – reduce the mileage of your fuel tank by up to 33% on highways and 5% in cities. Go greener by maximising fuel efficiency: only accelerate when you need to – not to change lanes, and not towards red lights!

Green car tip #4: Have proper tyre pressure levels

Tyre pressure changes with the weather, and tires that aren’t properly inflated create extra resistance on the road that makes your car’s engine work harder. Check them each season where you can to keep those wheels rolling smoothly.

Green car tip #5: Keep your car in optimum shape

A properly maintained vehicle of any age is more efficient, creates less carbon emissions and best of all, saves you money. Regularly maintaining engine performance will mean less fuel consumption, less carbon emissions and less costly repairs down the line.
