Your engine could suffer permanent damage if it is low on oil. Runnings your engine on low to no oil can end up costing you thousands in repairs. Checking your engine oil only takes a few minutes. Performing a regular check of your engine oil can save you a lot of hassles and money on the long run.
Step One
You will need to ensure that your vehicle is parked on a flat surface. Parking on a slope will not give you an accurate engine oil reading. Ensure that once parked, your vehicle is in the park and the handbrake has been applied. It is important to ensure you have warmed your care up for at least 15 minutes before checking your engine oil.
Step Two
Locate the bonnet release lever in your vehicle and pull it to open your bonnet. Your vehicle should have a safety latch to secure your bonnet open when working within the engine bay. Apply the safety latch and double check it has been applied and secured correctly.
Step Three
Locate the engine oil dipstick. This will normally have a red, orange, or yellow top to help you locate it. Have some tissue paper with you so you can wipe the dipstick off.
Step Four
Pull out the engine oil dipstick and wipe it clean with your tissue paper. Insert the dipstick back into its position and pull it out again. Now is when you look at the end of the dipstick, where there will be an indicator to show you the high and low readings.
Step Five
Look at the oil on the end of the dipstick. If the engine oil level is between the high and low marks, then your car’s engine oil is ok. If the engine oil levels are below, you need to add oil immediately.
